The reason is because I feel crummy and because it appears, on the face of it, that I'm being unkind. I do struggle with this but three stars means the film is GOOD and most elements of them are spot on.
I normally knock a point or two off for the way the story flows and the odd scene in the film. Apart from that my three star reviews are a solid gold three stars with very little to fault.
Im rambling a little but needed to get my point across. I've always thought that JCVD is a pretty good actor, and very underrated. He no Bobby DeNiro, but he does impress me with his more dramatic performances.
They all show off his range as an actor, focusing more on his character, rather than just high kicking action. Actually, if you look at most of JCVD's films, especially the more recent ones you can see that he is doing his very best to down play his action man image.
As you probably guest, I am a bit of a fan of Mr Van Damme but I'm not biest and will admit he has done some dodgy films but I am loyal and do own them all.
Right, the review of Maximum Risk. It's a pretty solid movie with JCVD playing twins, one of which is killed early on in a rather spectacular chase through the street of Nice.
The other twin finds out that he had a brother and goes about trying to put the pieces back together, taking on his brothers identity, discovering that his bro has a list of Russian Mafia names.
During the journey from France to New York and back, we are introduced to Natasha Henstridge, the girlfriend of the late twin.
This where the story fails a little for me. It's all fine and dandy to have Natasha "I can't wait to get my jugs out" Henstridge along for the ride but you just know there will be a poinless bit of nudity.
And in this case there is no surprise in that department. She is kidnapped with JCVD's charecter and spend time handcuffed together in a hotel room.
Anyway they nip off to the bathroom and end up playing hide the sausage. It's all a bit silly, when you consider that this woman is a bit of tart when you think about it.
She hardly knows her deceased lovers brother but is quite happy to have a quick shag with him. Its all a bit unessasary.
What's even more horrific is that our chatecters have been running around France and New York for days and have not even had chance for a wash! He plonka mush have smelt like a lump of Stilton and she must have been so sweaty, the stench would cause you to gag!
If you are going to make love then have a good scrub first otherwise it will be like pulling open a toasted cheese sandwich.
There are some very good action scenes with fight in a sauna and another brutal car chase at the end of the film.
All of which looks very authentic and real. The thing about the sauna fight scene is that is all done with towels wrapped around the waist that some how stay on perfectly.
